SS22 LONDON ON HEAT

“London on heat” is how the founder of AGR, Alicia Robinson, describes the Spring/Summer 2022 collection. A typically technicolour offering from the brand, this kaleidoscopic collection speaks to our collective longing for freedom; for a post-lockdown summer filled with fun, excitement, hanging out and having a good time. Drawing on British photographer Martin Parr’s hyper-saturated images of everyday life, the collection channels the spirit and style of Nineties rave culture, which feels especially prescient to now. Featuring knitwear in a variety of imaginative forms, in addition to printed denim, silk sets, nylon tracksuits, crocheted and hand-knit pieces, the collection also includes gradient lace men’s vests and intricate. Lycra knits. Form-fitting and flesh-flashing, these psychedelic pieces are tailor-made – for all shapes and sizes – for a summer of party-going. Taking inspiration from American abstract painter Mark Rothko’s seminal colour field paintings, the season’s colour palette is as eye-catching as it is intensive and immersive: AGR’s signature lime green is accompanied by neons, which are juxtaposed with natural, neutral tones and the use of space-dyed yarns. Also looking to the early spray-gun paintings of Roy Colmer, AGR created new jacquards in collaboration with the Netherlands-based knitwear manufacturer Knitwear Lab, emulating the appearance of the American artist’s spray- and stripe-work. Using only the highest quality Merino wool, this 15-piece capsule features one garment – the ‘Cherish cardigan’ – in which British artist Joel Holbrook’s mural on the wall of the AGR studio appears in jacquard form. Also referencing Parr’s photography, the accompanying lookbook sees the collection modelled in a summery scene featuring an ice cream van, inflatable beach toys and quad bikes. Fun-fuelled and sunsoaked, the images epitomise the spirit of the season, which is simply about embracing life and having fun; lightness and positivity.
